Paul Aiken, Director of the Atuhors Guild, complained that the text-to-speech function of Kindle 2 is illegal.
It was a copyright infringement Aiken says since the Kindle was made to be an Ebook Reader and not as an Audiobook.
Somehow Paul Aiken has a point, because it deems as the Kindle 2 useless in some way. Users could have gone and looked for an Audiobook rather than an Ebook if they are going to use the Kindle 2 for listening and not for reading.
There could have been a separate program for text-to-speech programs, but the problem is, it is a new feature that Kindle 2 has to offer. It makes reading and ebook a whole lot easier.
Plus this also puts a lot of pressure on the future manufacturers of Audiobooks since they already have a competitor long before they were able to make an audiobook.
This truly is something that needs to be looked into.

Would Aiken be comfortable extending his notion to cover devices that scan printed books and convert them to speech for the blind and partially sighted, I wonder.
